Curve analysis for SAT November 2019 USA exam:

  • Reading - the overall difficulty is slightly greater than that of the International version mainly due to two science passages. You can expect 10 points off for 1 mistake, 20 points off for 2-3 mistakes, and 40 points off for 4 mistakes. 
  • Writing/Grammar - the overall difficulty of writing/grammar is normal. As always, the curve is steeper and you need to be meticulous. You can expect 10 points off for 1 mistake, 30 points off for 2 mistakes, 40 points off for 3 mistakes.  
  • Math - "Heart of algebra" is relatively difficult; students lacking a solid foundation may be prone to making mistakes. "problem solving" and "passport to advanced math" are of normal difficulty. Expect 10 points off for 1 mistake, 30 points off for 2 mistakes and 40 points off for 3 mistakes.

Passage 1: Questions 1-10 - Literature -  November 2019 North America SAT Test QAS

This passage is adapted from Alexander McCall Smith,The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon.©2013 by Alexander McCall Smith,Mma Ramotswe married to Mr.J.L.B.Matekoni.

Summary:The story is mainly about a woman who runs a hair salon business. She usually doesn't have much contact with books and magazines on topics related to "how to run a good business" and "how to make a profit". Until one day, she found a magazine in her husband's garage, which contained business advice, saying that if the business did not grow bigger, it would be a failure, causing the hostess to reflect on whether she should revise her attitude towards doing business.

Passage 2: Questions 11-20 - History -  November 2019 North America SAT Test QAS

Passage 1 is adapted from a speech delivered in 1876 by John Mercer Langston,"Our Political Parties."Passage 2 is adapted from a speech delivered in 1890 by T.Thomas Fortune,"It is Time to Call a Halt".Langston was an African American lawyer,diplomat,and abolitionist.Fortune was an African American Journalist who founded the National Afro-American League,an advocacy organization,in 1890. 

Summary:The author of the first article is an abolitionist. Starting from 1867, when President Lincoln was abolishing slaves, the author did not state his position on abolishing slaves, but emphasized that every citizen should cherish his right to vote.

The author of the second article is a black man, saying that the U.S. government cannot do it every time it makes a promise. The views of this group of two articles are not contradictory, but the same idea.

Passage 3: Questions 21-30 - Natural Science -  November 2019 North America SAT Test QAS

This passage is adapted from Julia Rosen,"Earth May Have Kept its Own Water Rather Than Getting it from Asteroids"©2015 by American Association for the Advancement of Science. 

Summary:It is about how the water on the earth comes from. Does the water on the earth already exist? Or was it brought by a meteorite that hit the earth from outer space? Scientists judge by using the same element as hydrogen.

Passage 4: Questions 31-41 -Social Science-  November 2019 North America SAT Test QAS

This passage is adapted from Thomas Gilovich and Lee Ross,The Wisest One in the Room:How You Can Benefit from Social Psychology's Most Powerful Insights.©2015 by Thomas Gilovich and Lee Ross.

Summary:The theme of this article is false impression, which means that when disagreements occur, people who have not expressed their opinions tend to stick to their opinions. This article cited many examples. One of the researchers conducted an experiment and asked participants if they would like to wear a sandwich costume and stand on the street. And let the participants infer whether other people will agree, and analyze the reasons for identification and disapproval, what kind of people will agree and what kind of people will not agree.

Passage 5: Questions 42-52 -Natural Science -  November 2019 North America SAT Test QAS

This passage is adapted from Gibert Waldauer,How Not to Be Eaten,The Insects Fight Back.©2012 by Gibert Waldauer.

Summary:This article is about moths. The scientists dyed the wings of moths in different colors. The experimental group was dyed the color of a butterfly, and the control group was dyed black. They wanted to study whether different wing colors had an effect on the moth's predation success rate. In the end, it was found that there was no significant impact.
