Digital SAT QAS Breakdown: May 2026 Test (5E) — The Shuffle Sibling: Same May Pool, New Costumes
Last updated: September 2026 · By the AllSatPapers Content Team
If you want to watch the College Board manufacture variety from a single question pool, put May 2026's 5E next to its sibling 5C. 5E is a 57-page English-only capture — Reading & Writing Modules 1 and 2 as Bluebook-style app screenshots, one question per page — whose questions are the same templates as 5C's, rebuilt with changed surface details and re-lettered answer choices. The moth-mimicry item keeps its logic but swaps species, predator, and researcher; the vocabulary openers keep their sentences but shuffle their options.
Crucially, 5E ships its own answer-key table at the back — and unlike a letter key copied from another file, this one is keyed to this file's shuffled choice order. We spot-verified it: Q1=B resolves to "Presentation," Q2=B to "efficiency of," Q14=D to the mimicry completion. Every check landed. That makes 5E a fully self-consistent, self-checkable document — and the cleanest demonstration in the May bundle of why you should memorize answers as words, never letters.

What's Inside the 5E File?
| Test date | May 2026 digital administration (English-only capture) |
| Format | 57-page image-only PDF: Bluebook-style app screenshots, landscape two-pane (passage left; stem + choices right), one question per page |
| Sections present | Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 only (numbering restarts at Module 2); no Math modules — consistent with "English Only" |
| Answer keys | Included Module 1 key (spot-verified): Chinese-headed table 题号 / 你的答案 ("your answer," blank) / 正确答案 ("correct answer"); visible rows Q1–21: 1B 2B 3A 4D 5B 6C 7D 8C 9A 10C 11B 12B 13C 14D 15D 16D 17B 18C 19C 20A 21D — table continues past Q21 |
| Identity | Choice-shuffled, detail-variant sibling of 5C — same question templates, new surface details, re-lettered options, keyed to its own arrangement |
Honesty note: 5E is image-only — no text layer, so there are no parsed question counts or overlap percentages for it. One question per page means the 57 pages ≈ 54 R&W questions plus key pages, consistent with a standard two-module English section; the Module 2 key page, if present, sits beyond our sampled pages. We report what our verified visual profile shows, nothing more.
Sample Questions — With the Spot-Verified Key
Reading & Writing, Module 1, Q1 — The Frye Item, Re-Dealt
Northrop Frye's Anatomy of Criticism (1957) — "what does the word 'projection' most nearly mean?"
The exact item that opens full-test 5A and English-only 5D — but here the choices are shuffled: A Estimation / B Presentation / C Elimination / D Prediction. 5E's key says Q1=B, and B is indeed "Presentation," the established canonical answer (the same answer sits at D in 5D's arrangement). Right behind it, Q2 is 5C's opener — closing air registers in vacant rooms "can actually reduce the ___ climate-control systems" — with options re-lettered to A limitation on / B efficiency of / C expense of / D need for, and the key's Q2=B checks out too. Same sentences, same four words, new deal of the cards — and 5E's key correctly tracks its own deal.

Reading & Writing, Module 1, Q14 — The Moth Item in New Costume
Moths emit ultrasonic pulses as acoustic aposematic signals to bats — "I am noxious, don't eat me." Researchers then found palatable moths mimicking the pulses of unpalatable species, suggesting that ______
The template is 5C's M1 Q14, but every surface detail changed: the species is now Amplypterus panopus of Central and South America (5C had Cechetra lineosa), the predator is the big brown bat Eptesicus fuscus (5C: Allen's big-eared bat), and the researchers are Jesse R. Barber et al. (5C: Juliette J. Rubin et al.). The four completion statements are the same ideas in a different letter order, and 5E's key lands on D — the Batesian-mimicry completion — which verifies. This is the retune engine caught mid-transformation: change the costume, keep the skeleton, re-letter the options.

Reading & Writing, Module 2, Q15 — The Caucasus Gold Question, Variant Two
Gold artifacts vanish from Caucasus sites around 1500 BCE even as metalworking continues elsewhere — which finding best supports the researchers' account?
Again the 5C template (M2 Q15) with the details rotated: "bow-and-arrow technology in northern Europe" replaces 5C's Roman-concrete comparison; the sites are Armavir and Horom (5C: Kazbegi and Horom); the artifact list runs to "beads and earrings" (5C: "pendants and vessels"). Studying both versions side by side is the fastest way to learn what these items actually test — the inference structure survives every edit. Module 2 opens gently, by the way: Q1 (p028) is an easy one-word vocabulary item about a Huasteca-region statue of a woman ballgame athlete whose "image of a powerful athlete ___ the idea that women in pre-Columbian societies held only passive roles" (reveals / predicts / forgets / challenges → challenges).

The Key Page Itself
5E's Module 1 key is a three-column table with Chinese headers — 题号 (question number), 你的答案 ("your answer," left blank), 正确答案 ("correct answer") — an odd but harmless UI mix: English test content, Chinese key chrome. Visible rows run Q1–Q21 and the table continues below the crop. Three spot-checks against sampled questions all verified: Q1=B ("Presentation") ✓, Q2=B ("efficiency of") ✓, Q14=D (mimicry completion) ✓.

5E in the May Family — and Beyond
- 5E ↔ 5C — the shuffle line. Every sampled overlap is a 5C template with new surface details and re-lettered options, each file keyed to its own arrangement. Together they're a two-document masterclass in how one pool becomes many forms.
- 5E ↔ 5G — the duplicate. Every directly comparable sampled page of 5G is identical to 5E — same text and same choice order — and 5G's visible key tail matches 5E's at Q21=D. Treat 5G as a second capture of this same form, not a new form (our 5G breakdown shows the evidence and the buying advice).
- 5E ↔ 5A/5D — the shared opener. The Frye "projection" item also opens 5A's and 5D's Module 1. The English-only captures and the full re-typeset sets are windows onto the same live May pool.
- 5E vs June 2026. June's 6A is a fully parsed 147-question form with a complete inline answer key covering both adaptive routes, and the 6H bank adds 495 questions. Master May's R&W pool here, then step up to June for keyed full-length practice and math volume.

Deep Analysis: What 5E Tests, Module by Module
Reading & Writing Module 1 — Vocab-Led, Then Dense Science
The module opens with short single-paragraph vocabulary items (the shuffled Frye and air-register items), then ramps to dense logical completions by mid-module — the moth-acoustics item at Q14 is the flagship: a two-step causal inference wearing a heavy science costume. This is the standard May difficulty curve, identical in structure to 5C's.
Reading & Writing Module 2 — Easy Opener, Data-Interpretation Core
M2 opens gently (the Huasteca "challenges" item is a one-word vocab check) and builds to the Caucasus archaeology item at Q15 — a dense social-science completion requiring you to weigh which finding actually supports a historical claim. No Hard/Easy route labels are visible anywhere in the capture.
Math — Not Included (and Why That's Fine)
Like all of May's English-only files, 5E contains no Math modules. For math, May's full sets 5A and 5B carry both math modules (including their wood-duck standard-deviation retune), and June's 6A adds a fully keyed 147-question full test.
Tips for Students Using 5E
- Pair 5E with 5C, not 5G. 5E and 5C are variants of the same templates — solve both and compare costumes. 5G is a duplicate capture of 5E itself; it adds nothing (our 5G post is blunt for a reason).
- Memorize words, never letters. "Presentation" answers the Frye item at B here and at D in 5D. Letters travel between files; meanings don't.
- Use the blank "your answer" column. The key's 你的答案 column is empty — pencil in your picks first, then score against 正确答案. Instant self-scoring drill.
- On mimicry and science completions, name the mechanism. If a choice doesn't say "harmless species copying a harmful one's warning signal," it's decoration. Cross out restatements.
- When details change, the skeleton is the lesson. Species, sites, and researchers are interchangeable; the logical relation being tested is not. After each question, say the skeleton aloud in one sentence.
